HISTORY & PHILOSOPHY
We are the eco-conscious shoe brand with the cleaner products for the environment.
D’BRIS comes from the word debris. Debris means scattered pieces of trash or remains. That is what D’BRIS recycled shoes are made from. Our shoes are trash.
It all began at a skatepark while complaining over a broken shoe and the lack of more sustainable options on the market. At first we just wanted to go on a mission to see who was making the best recycled shoe in the skate and surf community. It was clear early on that a recycled shoe that fitted our taste, style and environmental consciousness did not exist. Then delving deeper and looking at the so called market leaders of recycled shoes in the general fashion industry, we soon discovered that their products were hidden by a facade of market tactics that made their products seem ‘green’ and ‘environmentally friendly, ' which is commonly referred to as ‘greenwashing’. We also found that most of these recycled shoes, even if they used more materials, were made in questionable places where fair work and trade practices were suspect. Clear concerns resonated with us here, so we set out on a mission to see if we could make a recycled shoe, with recycled materials, in a factory that had fair work and trade practices. Simple right?
In fact this was no easy task. We crisscrossed our way across Europe seeking suppliers and ethical manufacturing for eco-friendly or recycled shoes. At one tradeshow event in Milan, we were laughed at by the major fashion suppliers who said an affordable, more sustainable or recycled shoe was impossible! We asked 100’s of industry leaders why there aren't more recycled shoe options on the market? And why the big fashion companies lie or hide the so-called sustainable practices they advertise? No one had a clear answer, which only fuelled our commitments to bring this project to life. Our mission continued from 2018 into 2019 as we continued to gather small leads, until we eventually nailed a supply chain local to an ethical factory, with fair workplaces in Spain.
Since then, we have managed to make a competitively priced, handcrafted shoe made from ocean plastic and car tires, which we launched on Kickstarter in late 2019, to be able to fund the production of our first batch shoes. Our mission has finally become a reality and we hope you can join us on this journey of promoting our recycled shoe and proving that a more sustainable option, even if not fully sustainable, with less raw materials is always possible.
PRODUCTS
We manufacture in a fair labour factory in Spain unisex shoes. The idea behind our shoes is to keep the environmental footprint as small as possible. However, we don't compromise on comfort, style nor durability.
MANUFACTURING
For something to be environmentally sustainable, as we see it, the impact on nature should be zero. The word sustainable is being used way too often. Even though we strive to have the smallest possible impact on the environment, we do not call ourselves sustainable.
Whether the materials are made from oil, the skin from an animal or organic plants, everything has a negative impact on the environment. The less raw material the better. That is why we use repurposed or recycled materials. We are doing so to the furthest extent possible while still ensuring high durability.
What shoes you are wearing alone, is not going to secure a healthy future for our planet. We know that, but we believe that every bit counts, and to turn the bad trends around, there are millions of small things that need to be changed. Your shoes being one of them. By offering better solutions and raising awareness we can be part of getting the snowball rolling.
Fashion trends are not or for us. Our ambition is that every shoe we make will be worn for a long time and not put into the closet because they have gone out of style.
We source our car tires from Spain, close by our factory, the plastic we use in our shoes is also sourced locally in Spain. All processes, glues and dyes used in our manufacturing process are non-chemical, our shoe boxes and packaging are made from recycled cardboard.
EMISSIONS
It is hard to measure, but the factory where our shoes are made is powered by solar panels, and we ensure our supply chain is local to the factory, as much as possible. We are still a small start-up, but as we grow and expand this will of course be addresses further.
ENERGY & WASTE
Solar panels at the factory, where the shoes are produced. Waste present in the factory is actually used to make the inner-soles of our shoes, so all inner soles are made of factory waste.
FAIR LABOR
Factory workers work no more than a 40 hour week, unless they want to for overtime, have paid holidays, sick days etc. and everything according to the local legislations.
GIVING BACK
We do clean-ups in the areas where we are present and promote this via social media to encourage other people to do it.
