HISTORY & PHILOSOPHY
AfriKat Chalkbags is a blend of utilitarian design and handcrafted elegance, born out of a deep appreciation for traditional fabrics, superior handcrafted workmanship, and the sport of climbing. Each of our chalkbags is anchored in the requirements of climbers, showcasing the brilliance of South African ethnic textiles in bold, striking fashion.
South African patterns, both vibrant and subtle, carry a wealth of historical significance, undergoing a remarkable revival in recent years.
When we combine these exquisite cotton fabrics with robust hardware, the result is a range of beautifully handcrafted bags and pouches that can withstand frequent use.
At AfriKat, our founder Kat has a distinct eye for practical details. This practical approach ensures all our products not only meet functionality requirements but also offer unique elements that differentiate them from conventional offerings. At the core of our philosophy, we stand firm in our belief that aesthetic allure and function can coexist seamlessly!
MANUFACTURING
The base fabrics for my products are sourced from South Africa (there is only one supplier worldwide). It is an ethnic fabric that has a long cultural history, that I also have a connection with through my childhood there. The additional materials from my products are sourced from leading suppliers in the industry, using the recycled options where available.
We produce locally in Berlin, either ourselves or outsourcing as "close to home" as possible. The production is small-batch and there is no additional chemical use. Packaging is done using natural materials such as hemp string and paper for labels, paper packaging, etc.
EMISSIONS
Since our main fabric is the item that travels the farthest in our supply chain, but it is only possible to source this fabric from one place, we co-ship all fabric shipments within larger shipments to reduce additional packaging and separate freights / deliveries.
ENERGY & WASTE
As we are a small production, there is little to no industrial waste being produced. We specifically designed our fabric patterns for as little fabric waste as possible and reuse parts where applicable. Any waste we do produce is separated according to German standards.
FAIR LABOR
AfriKat stands for creativity and freedom of movement. We bring this same attitude to the workplace, where team members are particularly encouraged to bring their ideas to the table, and there is high flexibility for new roles and responsibilities based on the team members' characters and wishes.
