Bergans of Norway

HISTORY & PHILOSOPHY

Bergans of Norway is a historic outdoor brand that has been synonymous with quality and innovation since its founding in 1908, with a philosophy rooted in a deep respect for nature and a commitment to sustainability. The company's founder, Ole F. Bergan, was a pioneer of modern outdoor equipment and clothing, and his legacy lives on in the brand's continued focus on innovation, functionality, and durability. Today, Bergans is a leading producer of high-performance outdoor gear and apparel, beloved by adventurers and outdoor enthusiasts around the world for its uncompromising quality and commitment to preserving the natural environment.

They always focus on high-quality products, and the lifetime of these. "Long live the product" is the main thinking behind both the product design & development and their circular services. In the design stage they optimize products for later repair. Their in-house repair room delivers valuable feedback back to the product specialists.

PRODUCTS

Bergans of Norway uses recycled polyester, polyamide, wool, cotton and down. All other down is certified, and an increasing number of wool styles as well. If not recycled, cotton is organic.

The supply chain is mainly located in the Far East, with fabric & trim suppliers (tier 2) close to our manufacturing partners (tier 1). We mainly source bluesign approved fabric and trims and use more sustainable colouring methods (solution dye) as well.

MANUFACTURING

A bluesign systempartner, source preferably bluesign APPROVED fabrics and trims and apply the bluesign RSL for all the products and suppliers. They do not use any consumer-facing packaging, only polybags necessary for product transport, made from recycled material and removed centrally to deliver for recycling.

They only work directly with well-known production partners (no agencies), which they have been doing business with for many years. All facilities are inspected by their own personnel. Bergans of Norway is part of Ethical Trade Norway, where they report annually and transparently on our whole supply chain and how they work to secure and improve working conditions and labour rights. The Code of Conduct, describing the basic principles of business relations, human and workers rights, is mandatory for all their suppliers.

EMISSIONS

Bergans of Norway is part of STICA (Swedish Textile Initiative for Climate Action), and has committed to reduce all emissions (Scope 1,2 & 3) in line with the Paris agreement. They report emissions annually through STICA. Even if they have done so in the past, they do not any longer offset any emissions as they think that any claims on "climate-neutrality" are misleading and shifting focus from the concrete need to drastically reduce emissions.

Within STICA, they work together with both competitors and supply chain partners to push projects for better energy efficiency and the implementation and increased use of renewable energy. Avoiding any sort of air shipment if not really necessary (e.g. due to delays) and have also used train shipments from Asia as long as that has been possible.

ENERGY & WASTE

They use more sustainable dyeing methods like Solution Dye (saving water, energy and CO2), and source preferably bluesign APPROVED fabrics, with stricter requirements regarding the use of resources and chemical management. Water treatment plants are mandatory for their fabric suppliers. Bergans of Norway only uses renewable energy in all their own premises (offices, warehouses, shops) and support our supply chain partners in projects like STICA to push implementation of renewable energy.

They use many fabrics made from pre-consumer recycled material, thus reducing any industrial waste. They have a return policy for our consumers in our home market, utilizing used garments for re-use, re-design, or recycling. They offer repair for all our customers, to prolong the lifetime of our products.

GIVING BACK

Bergans of Norway has implemented several circular economy offerings into our business case: Repair, second-hand, Redesign, and different Rental & subscription models. They cooperate with Spinnova, offering clothing made of the innovative and more sustainable cellulose fiber made from wood.

They have offered repair as long as the company has been existing (since 1908), and offer this to all customers. They also collect used clothes from the Norwegian customers to re-use, repair or re-design. Bergans of Norway have invented several rental models both within our stores and together with partners, as well as a subscription model for kids clothing

They report annually through Ethical Trade Norway and STICA. Bergans of Norway also publish comprehensive information on their website
